Painting Between Earth and Heaven

Chloe Early's paintings capture the adrenalin and euphoria of diving, "an escape from reality, gravity and the downward pull of the earth." I was reminded of the unknown ‘falling man’ who jumped out of the exploding Twin Tower. She chats with TheLondonProject about her new exhibition in Brick Lane.

Why did you call your show 'Between Earth and Heaven'?

For me the paintings are about in between places, between ground and sky, dream and reality, city and nature and I thought the title summed these things up.

How long did it take you to complete this exhibition?
It took about six months. I work on the paintings all together so at times it seems progress is slow, but somehow at the end it all comes together.

When do you know to stop?

When I cant think of what else to do, if my mind is blank they must be finished.

What do you do to get away from painting?

Go for a walk or drink a cup of tea.

Common to all the paintings in your new show is a female diver. What's this about?

She is a piece of glitter in the dust, a celebration and a force of freedom. Diving is the ultimate death defying act, an attempt at fllght and an escape from reality, gravity and the downward pull of the earth. In the paintings gravity is frozen for a moment, she never falls or hurts herself, instead she jumps twists and bends with total disregard for what is going on around her.

What's next?

My next solo show is in Dublin early next year.  Before that a group show in Killkenny and possibly an art fair in Edinburgh.

If you had to put one book on the tube/bus for a
stranger to read, what would it be?

The Wind-up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami.  It’s a relly epic book and I cant really remeber what  its about but I love the way the ordinary and extraordinary collide in his books. Its like a really good dream that you dont want to wake up from.

Red sauce or brown sauce?

Red sauce with chips sitting on a pier in West Cork after
a swim in the sea.

Between Earth and Heaven runs until June 24.
