Earlier this year I was involved in a project (to be finished) which involved documenting peoples’ experience of losing their virginity. Like learning to become a therapist I involuntarily remembered my own milestone experience.
As the interviews progressed I realised that it is the build up, the emotional journey, the anxiety and peer pressure, the secret thoughts, the diary entries, the expectations – these are the memories. The actual physical act of intercourse; in hindsight it seemed secondary – although it might not have felt like that at the time – but too all encountered in these interviews losing one’s virginity felt like being released of a colossal weight and cast in to adult hood.
